If I worked with my hands (and back and neck……)

OK, I’m only your insurance guy (or maybe just one of your insurance guys….. let’s fix that) but I’m also a life-long exercise junkie. Since graduating from college over a million years ago I’ve played soccer, bicycled, weight trained and practiced yoga, at times possibly to excess depending on who you ask. We even boast a pretty solid gym facility here in our office.

So, if I were a dentist, I’d do yoga. I’d do yoga as if it were a part of my job. I’d do it religiously and at least three days a week.

I’m not an exercise scientist but I’ve been acquainted with thousands of dentists for almost two decades. I’ve heard the stories and I’ve seen the results of the debilitating back, neck and hand injuries. It happens and it happens a lot and it usually doesn’t just happen when you’re ready to retire anyway.

Dentistry is skilled labor and your body is your greatest tool. Protect it.

Yes, I can make sure your disability insurance is in shape but only you can take care of your body.

So I say yoga. You’re all doctors so you know that you don’t just listen to your insurance guy about this. Get a check-up and ask your doctor if they think you’re healthy enough for yoga.

Also, don’t be fooled into thinking that it has to be done in a 110 degree room or at a power crazed pace for 90 minutes. That might be right for some of you but know that there are many more gentle options that will provide you with ample benefit. Maybe then you’ll be able to leave practice when you want to and not when you have to.

Be safe and know that in the interim, we’ll be happy to help you review your disability coverage whenever you want.
